Glimpses, photos & experiences of a foreigner living in Slovenia, Ljubljana
” The vintage, friends, is over,
And here sweet wine makes, once again,
Sad eyes and hearts recover” .. and where else the culture of wine is better know in Slovenia as in Haloze, from Celts time, continuing with Romans till our days, now being part of the seven districts of the Podravje wine region. Area that I wanted to know and explore with Tasha, thinking will be a nice reminder of the area where I grow up,where wine is being made as well and I will get to know a bit more about Slovenia while meeting some dear people, from Podlehnik.
Living Ljubljana and its mountain surroundings,we headed towards Haloze. The nature transformed itself from mountains to large fields and after to amazing hills, with many vineyards on top of them and wild forests in their valleys . The sun started to warm the hop of the hills and the coolness of the valleys was refreshing us on our road.. I think that Tasha felt in love with the explosion of smells all around her, first from the cute little farms spread on the fields around Haloze , that grow grains and animals, then from the forests of the valleys and hills, deep wild forests where wild animals have a home and then the smell of the the sunny vineyards, located on top of every steep hill
On one of Haloze’s steep hills we found our home for few days,in Podlehnik, on a beautiful farm that grows lavender and other flowers, located between two old vineyards. The farm belongs to Chris & Una,a good -hearted couple, that for the last almost 6 years, made their home,on one of the most beautiful hills of Haloze , adopting the local traditions and language and bringing their own personality to the place.
The cottage for guests is located high up the hill ,is remade from zero by Chris, fully equipped with every gadget a home needs inclusive an impressive toilet collection of books:D and can comfortable accommodate at least 6 people.
The farm is spread all around the steep hill, Una grows a lot of different lavender from which she prepares her own natural cosmetics , part of the hill is dedicated to the sensitive flowers, that each day require work and love and part is dedicated to lavender, that Tasha learned to guard from the fearless cats:) . Baby plants of lavender are spread all over the hill and also till down the valley, where Una and Chris have their home, the small road to the house is sprinkled with perfumed lavender . The house where they live in is an old cottage that Chris works hard to renew it respecting the old traditions but making it comfortable till the last gadget, inclusive wifi:D. Their home and farm became also a small sanctuary for rescued animals, from kind Jessy, the 4 rescued cats that loved to annoy Tasha and the 4 ducks, that have a wonderful home now, in a special made for them pound. Beautiful place to enjoy a tea while Tasha met for the first time in her life the ducks:D
. Also for the first time in my life, I enjoyed each morning the natural eggs the ducks were giving us🙂
We got glimpses of the local traditions and meet the Haloze people.During day everyone was working their farm, doing lots of weeding or taking care of the grapes all around us,like our neighbors were doing . Una showed us the Haloze dance and I tasted from the cherries all around the farm, the evenings we’re reserved to the local drinks, taken from the old wine celler ,I remembered my childhood days tasting višnjevec and smrekovec, saw the local architecture , meet the local animals and saw the dears of the forest . Caught few spectacular rainbows like this one and went to bed while outside was this.
The area is perfect for hiking and exploring, found some great places to sit under the sun while Tasha explored the steep hill and valley😉
